Which base and call point do I need on a two-wire SAVwire system?

Two-wire SAVwire zones carry sounders and beacons on the detection pair by reversing polarity; use the YBO-R/6PA base and the CCP-SAVWIRE call point, and confirm the panel supports SAVwire.

Direct answer

Two-wire SAVwire is a reverse-polarity signalling method that allows sounders and beacons to be driven on the same pair of wires as detectors and call points. When the panel signals an alarm it reverses the polarity of the zone: sounders and beacons are polarised so that they operate only in the reversed condition, while the detector base and the call point are designed to keep operating through the reversal — Hochiki lists the SAVwire base as a "line reversal" base for this reason. The YBO-R/6PA is the specified detector mounting base and the CCP-SAVWIRE is the specified call point for two-wire SAVwire installations. Do not assume that any conventional device will tolerate the reversal: third-party devices generally need additional components before they can be connected to a SAVwire zone. Contact Hochiki technical support before adding a non-Hochiki device to a SAVwire circuit.

Applies to

  • Products / Models: YBO-R/6PA (current conventional detector range), CCP-SAVWIRE (Two-Wire / SAVwire systems)
  • Firmware / Version: Not applicable
  • Region: Not applicable
  • Standards: CCP-SAVWIRE — EN 54-11. The YBO-R/6PA base carries no separate EN 54 product approval. Panel behaviour on the zone is subject to EN 54-2; check that the zone options you set on the panel remain EN 54-2 compliant.

How two-wire (SAVwire) circuits work

  • Two-wire SAVwire circuits use reverse-polarity signalling to drive sounders/beacons on the same pair of wires.
  • On systems that support two-wire / SAVwire, sounders and beacons are wired on the two-wire detection circuit using reverse-polarity operation.
  • Detectors and call points are wired with normal polarity; when the system is activated the polarity is reversed on the circuit, and the detector base and call point are designed to keep operating through the reversal.
  • Conventional (non two-wire) systems typically operate using zoned wiring and separate sound circuits rather than the two-wire reverse-polarity approach.

Is my panel compatible with two-wire SAVwire?

SAVwire operation depends on the control panel, and the YBO-R/6PA data sheet states that control panel compatibility is required. Check the panel's own compatibility list before specifying two-wire devices. On the Hochiki CP conventional panel range, and on the Kentec Sigma CP panels whose manual describes the same option, two-wire operation is a feature of the "T" series, and each zone has a "sounders inhibited" option that configures that zone for conventional, non-SAVwire bases. Confirm both the panel series and the per-zone setting. If the panel does not support SAVwire, design the system with a separate sounder circuit instead; you cannot make SAVwire devices work on a panel that does not reverse the zone.

Which detector mounting base should I use for a two-wire system?

  • Use a conventional detector mounting base designed for two-wire systems. The YBO-R/6PA base is the specified conventional detector mounting base for two-wire SAVwire installations.
  • On the current range the SAVwire (line reversal) base is the YBO-R/6PA, used with SOC-E3N, DCD-AE3, DCD-CE3, DFJ-AE3, DFJ-CE3 and DRD-E detectors. On earlier ranges the equivalent bases were YBN-O/6PA (CDX 3T range, with DFJ-AE3/CE3 detectors), YBO-R/5PA (CDX range) and YBF-RL/PA4 (CD range). Detectors and bases are not interchangeable across ranges — a CD range detector will not work on a CDX range base, and vice versa — so confirm both the base and the detector generation before ordering replacements.

What are the key device and wiring requirements for two-wire SAVwire installations?

The CCP-SAVWIRE is the specified call point for two-wire SAVwire systems. When specifying or replacing equipment, explicitly request a two-wire SAVwire-capable panel so that suppliers and installers select compatible devices. Connect all detectors, sounders and beacons, and call points to the designated two-wire reverse-polarity circuit in accordance with the panel and device wiring instructions.

How does the system behave when activated?

When the system activates, the panel reverses polarity on the two-wire circuit, triggering sounders and beacons, while the detector base and call point are designed to keep operating through the reversal.

When to contact technical support

Contact Hochiki technical support before connecting any third-party or non-SAVwire device to a SAVwire zone, before mixing SAVwire and standard conventional bases on the same zone, and if sounders operate in quiescent condition or fail to operate on alarm after the zone has been wired as documented.

Safety note

This article is general guidance for Hochiki Europe products. Design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and modification of fire detection and alarm systems should be carried out by, or under the responsibility of, a competent person in accordance with the applicable standards (for example BS 5839-1 in the UK). Statutory requirements imposed by the relevant enforcing authority also apply. Always refer to the current product manual and data sheet for the exact model before carrying out any work.
