How do I program a new address into a device?
Set and store a device address with the TCH-B200: left key for tens, right key for units, centre key to store.
Direct answer
To set a new address, locate the device on the TCH-B200 hand-held programmer and press the left key to switch it on. A battery check message is displayed, followed by the address currently stored in the device. Advance the display with the left key (tens) and right key (units), then press the centre key to store the new address.
Applies to
- Products / Models: TCH-B200, PL-2 and PL-3 programming leads. Reads and sets addresses on the Hochiki ESP range: analogue sensors (ALN, ATJ, ACB, ACC, ACD), HCP/ICP manual call points, the CHQ-SIM/SOM/POM mini-modules, the CHQ-ARI remote indicator, CHQ-WS2 wall sounder, CHQ-WSB2 wall sounder beacon, YBO-BS base sounder and YBO-BSB2 base sounder beacon. Larger CHQ interface modules such as the CHQ-DZM/DIM2/DSC2/DRC2/MRC2/SZM2 are not addressed with the programmer at all: their address is set on the first seven switches of the 8-bit DIL switch on the module.

How do I set device address?
Sensors clip straight onto the programmer, aligning the three locating pips with the grooves. A mini-module, a manual call point or an ACB-EW cannot clip on and needs a programming lead — which lead depends on the connector on the device, and Can I address mini-modules and call points? lists them. Plug the lead into the remote programming socket on the TCH-B200 first, do not short the crocodile clips together, and remove the lead from the programmer when it is not in use.
- Fit the device to the programmer, lining the three locating tabs up with the grooves, or connect the appropriate programming lead.
- Press the left key to switch the programmer on. A battery check message is displayed, followed by the address currently stored in the device. An un-programmed device reads 127 or 254.
- Press the left key to add 10 to the displayed address, or the right key to add 1. The count wraps around at the top of the range, so keep pressing to reach a lower address: on a sensor, pressing the right key with 127 displayed returns to 1, and pressing the left key with 125 displayed shows 5. Three dots flash while the displayed address differs from the address stored in the device.
- Press the centre key to store the address. The three dots stop flashing and the display shows the address that has been set. If they keep flashing, the address has not been stored.
- Press the right key to switch the programmer off.
Which address range to use for base sounders/beacons
On a new installation, a base sounder or base sounder beacon fitted under a sensor does not need to be addressed with the programmer. Through auto-learning, the control panel addresses it automatically by taking the address of the fitted sensor and adding 127, and stores that address in the unit. Check that the control panel supports automatic addressing above 127.
When you replace a unit in an existing system, do not use the panel's auto-learn to address it - auto-learn rewrites configuration the panel already holds. Set the address by hand with the TCH-B200 instead, in the range 128 to 254, matching the address of the fitted sensor plus 127.
Set an address in the range 1 to 127 when the unit is used on its own, with no sensor fitted, as a wall sounder or wall sounder beacon. Always check the individual device and control panel instructions for the address range that applies.
Do not leave a device on its factory address. An un-programmed sensor reads 127, and a base sounder or base sounder beacon leaves the factory on 254. If the address is not written successfully and this is not noticed, several devices on the same loop can end up sharing that address, and the panel reports a double address fault.

When to contact technical support
Contact Hochiki Europe technical support if the three dots keep flashing after you press the centre key, if the programmer shows E1, E4 or E5 with the device correctly located and the correct lead fitted, or if a bAt message persists after a new PP3 battery has been installed. For what each code means, see What do the TCH-B200 error codes mean?
Safety note
This article is general guidance for Hochiki Europe products. Design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and modification of fire detection and alarm systems should be carried out by, or under the responsibility of, a competent person in accordance with the applicable standards (for example BS 5839-1 in the UK).
