What is BAFE SP203-1 and why does it matter?
BAFE SP203-1 is a voluntary third-party certification scheme for fire alarm companies; BAFE writes the criteria and UKAS-accredited certification bodies licensed by BAFE carry out the assessment.
Direct answer
BAFE SP203-1 — in full, the BAFE SP203-1 Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems Scheme — is a third-party certification scheme for companies that design, install, commission and maintain fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic premises. BAFE writes the scheme criteria; it is not itself a certification body. Assessments are carried out by UKAS-accredited certification bodies licensed by BAFE, so a certified company has been independently assessed as competent and working to recognised standards such as BS 5839-1. Choosing a BAFE SP203-1 registered company helps a Responsible Person demonstrate they used a competent provider.
Applies to
- Products / Models: General guidance (choosing a fire alarm provider for a non-domestic fire detection and alarm system)
- Firmware / Version: Not applicable
- Region: UK
- Standards: BAFE SP203-1; BS 5839-1
Why it matters
- BAFE registration is voluntary — it is not a legal requirement. Its value is evidential: third-party certification is highlighted in UK Government fire safety guidance, and verifying a provider's certification before work starts helps show that due diligence was exercised.
- Provides independent assurance that the provider is competent for the relevant work.
- Helps the Responsible Person evidence "competent person" selection. See What is a competent person for fire alarm work? and What are the duties of the Responsible Person for a fire alarm system?.
- Certification is granted per scope (design / installation / commissioning / maintenance) — check which scopes a company holds.
- BS 5839-1 notes that the competence of a fire alarm servicing organisation can be assured by using organisations that are third-party certificated by a UKAS-accredited certification body. The standard does not name any particular scheme.
How to check
- Look the company up on the BAFE Fire Safety Register using the BAFE Registered Company Search. You can search by company name, BAFE registration number, postcode, region or service required. Confirm the registration is current and that it covers the module you need.
- Ask for the certification paperwork the registered organisation issues on completion, and check that it identifies the BAFE scheme and the module the work falls under.
- The certificate is issued by the certification body, not by BAFE — check which body issued it.

Safety note
This article is general guidance for Hochiki Europe products. Design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and modification of fire detection and alarm systems should be carried out by, or under the responsibility of, a competent person in accordance with the applicable standards (for example BS 5839-1 in the UK). Statutory requirements imposed by the relevant enforcing authority also apply. Always refer to the current product manual and data sheet for the exact model before carrying out any work.
