How do I wire and address a Hochiki addressable call point?

Set addresses with the loop de-energised: HCP and ICP call points use a TCH-B200 with a PL-3 lead, and the SCP-DPS, SCP-W(DPS) and MCP-DPS use a DIL switch. Wire loop-in and loop-out to the terminals shown for the exact model.

Direct answer

Set the ESP loop address of a Hochiki addressable call point with the loop de-energised. How you set it depends on the model: HCP-E(SCI), HCP-W(SCI), ICP-E(SCI) and ICP-W(SCI) use a TCH-B200 hand-held programmer with a PL-3 programming lead plugged into the programming connector on the device, while the SCP-DPS, SCP-W(DPS) and MCP-DPS are set on the 8-bit DIL switch on the unit and need no programmer at all. Wire loop-in and loop-out to the terminals shown in the wiring diagram for the exact model — terminal numbering differs between the HCP-E(SCI), HCP-W(SCI) and ICP-W(SCI) — and terminate the cable screen only where the model provides a screen or earth terminal. CHQ "Smart-Fix" modules and the CHQ-CP2 are addressed with DIL switches instead, before installation.

Wiring loop-in and loop-out for addressable call points (HCP-style)

  1. Environment

    • Check the environment before you choose the model. The HCP-E(SCI) family is rated IP24 and its installation instructions state that it is for indoor use only. For outdoor or exposed positions, use the ICP-W(SCI), which is rated IP67 and whose installation instructions (2-3-0-3405) state that it can be used outdoors. The HCP-W(SCI) data sheet also quotes IP67, but its installation instructions (2-3-0-750-8) state that it is for indoor use only. The SCP-W(DPS) is rated IP33.
  2. Cable type

    • Use a two-core plus screen loop cable (two conductors plus a cable screen/foil/ drain).
  3. Terminal numbering

    • Terminal numbering differs between models — always use the wiring diagram in the installation instructions for the exact model.
    • For example, on the ICP-W(SCI) the loop positive conductors go to terminals 3 and 4 and the negative conductors to terminals 1 and 2.
    • On the HCP-W(SCI) the cable screen is terminated at the earth terminal inside the back box, and among the HCP-E(SCI) family only the HCP-E(DPS)-SCI (SR-1T back box) provides a dedicated cable screen terminal.
  4. General looping practice

    • Each loop cable provides one set of + and -. One cable + goes to one positive terminal and the other cable + to the other positive terminal; same for negatives.
    • Maintain correct polarity when connecting loop in and loop out on models with numbered terminals. A few devices are supplied with red non-polarised flying leads instead (the MCP-DPS call point and the CHQ-CP2 single input monitor), and on those the two leads can be connected either way round.
  5. Screen handling and mounting base considerations

    • The cable screen is a functional earth; it must be terminated to the designated screen terminals and must not be left contacting metalwork inside the mounting base or the remote LED metalwork.
    • Trim and dress screens so they sit correctly on the screen terminals and do not touch surrounding metal parts, to avoid nuisance indications or malfunctions.

Addressing call points and modules with a hand-held programmer

  1. Required tool

    • Use the TCH-B200 hand-held programmer for addressing Hochiki addressable devices.
  2. Power and addressing prerequisites

    • Do not energise the loop while setting an address. The address may be set before or after the device is connected to the loop, but the loop must not be powered (Hochiki installation instructions 2-3-0-635 for HCP-E(SCI), 2-3-0-750-8 for HCP-W(SCI), 2-3-0-3405 for ICP-W(SCI)). The TCH-B200 is powered by its own PP3 battery and supplies the device during programming; no 24 V loop supply is required.
    • The integral short-circuit isolators in (SCI) call points and CHQ modules only work once the loop is energised at its normal ESP supply of 17–41 V DC. That is the running condition after installation; it is not a condition for setting an address, which is always done with the loop de-energised.
  3. Programmer connection methods

    • Which lead you need depends on the connector on the device. Devices with a 3-pin programming socket (the HCP and ICP call points and the CHQ-SIM, CHQ-SOM and CHQ-POM mini modules) take the PL-3: plug the jack into the remote programming socket on the TCH-B200 and the square connector into the programming socket on the device (the square connector is not polarised). Devices addressed through their C and L terminals (the ACB-EW multi-heat sensor, a YBO-BS used as a wall sounder and the legacy CHQ-BS base sounder) take the PL-2: black clip to C, red clip to L. Sensors, the CHQ-WS2 wall sounder and the CHQ-WSB2 wall sounder beacon clip straight onto the programmer and need no lead. Do not improvise a connection to the loop terminals, and do not short the croc clips together.

Checks if a device does not respond after installation

  • Built-in isolators: (SCI) call points and CHQ I/O modules include integral isolators. After installation, the loop must be energised at the ESP loop supply (17–41 V DC) for those isolators and the devices to operate; addresses are still set with the loop de-energised.
  • If devices show unexpected behaviour after installation, verify:
    • Correct polarity on + and - terminations
    • Screens are terminated correctly and not contacting metalwork
    • the loop is de-energised while addresses are being set
  • Not every device is addressed with a hand-held programmer. The SCP-DPS, SCP-W(DPS) and MCP-DPS call points, the CHQ-CP2 single input monitor and the CHQ "Smart-Fix" modules (CHQ-SZM2(SCI), CHQ-DIM2(SCI), CHQ-DZM(SCI), CHQ-DRC2(SCI), CHQ-DSC2(SCI), CHQ-MRC2(SCI), CHQ-PCM(SCI), and the earlier CHQ-SZM / CHQ-DIM / CHQ-DRC / CHQ-DSC / CHQ-MRC modules they replaced) are all addressed on an 8-bit DIL switch instead. On the modules and the CHQ-CP2 the address uses the first seven switches; on the SCP-DPS, SCP-W(DPS) and MCP-DPS, switch 8 is not part of the address: it selects polling mode (ON = polling). Check the installation instructions for the specific model before moving any switch.

Conclusion

  • Use the wiring diagram in the installation instructions for the exact call point model to terminate loop screens, positives and negatives — terminal numbering is not the same across the HCP-E(SCI), HCP-W(SCI) and ICP-W(SCI) ranges.
  • Set addresses with the loop de-energised, using the TCH-B200 and the PL-3 programming lead, or the DIL switch on the SCP-DPS, SCP-W(DPS) and MCP-DPS.
  • Dress screens carefully to avoid contact with metalwork and ensure reliable operation.
